Jon and Laura

March 2020

1. What did life look like before you focused consistently on nutrition and fitness?

We didn't meal plan and didn't make time for exercising - we were busy with our careers and raising 2 active boys. We ate a lot of processed and frozen foods, trying to sprinkle in fruits and veggies - to be good parents:) Luckily, we have good genes so didn't think much about it - we were fairly healthy, we thought.

2. What made you decide to make a change?

In 2006, Jon's brother had a fatal heart attack at age 50 so we both decided it was time to join a gym and try to eat healthier. Over the years, we started meal planning to get more nutritious foods in our routine, went sporadically to the gym, Jon ran the Twin Cities Marathon 2 years and I ran several 1/2 marathons. We enjoyed running but going to the gym was a chore. We found out that just running wasn't enough - we both had aches, pains and injuries. Then a friend and I signed up for a group fitness class through community ed at the old martial arts studio - I loved the class and the teacher - Nickie! I was hooked but couldn't talk Jon into group fitness. In 2018, Jon had his first colonoscopy at age 53 and we got the dreaded call - he had colon cancer. We were lucky that they caught it when they did (GET YOUR COLONOSCOPY AT AGE 50!). They removed 5" of his colon and at his 1 year follow up was cancer free.

3. What has changed (attitude, energy, weight, habits, priorities, race times, blood work, confidence, etc.)?

During this time, both our boys were off at collage. We really focused on our nutrition and started enjoying cooking together. I love reading Nickie’s posts about how to think about nutrition as fuel for your body, and my favorite – the 80\20 rule. I finally talked Jon into joining the Warehouse and at his 2 year follow up had lost 29 pounds! With our boys done with collage and on their own, we started retirement planning. As we were listing what we wanted to do in retirement, our financial planner noted how active we plan to be. Thanks to the wonderful trainers at the Warehouse, at age 53 and 56, we feel better and have more energy than ever. And look forward to being active for a long time to come!
