1. What did life look like before The Warehouse? What past experiences shaped your views on health, fitness, nutrition, and wellness?
Maintaining an active lifestyle has always been important to me, and like any journey, it has its ups and downs. Prior to joining The Warehouse, my husband, Dave, and I were regulars at a local gym for both our own health and to be role models for our daughter, Sydney.
That all changed in May 2021 when I fractured the main weight-bearing bone in my foot. My active life came to an immediate stop. For months, I was stuck in a boot and on crutches, unable to put any weight on my foot. It was a lot of sitting around! While smaller injuries had sidelined me before, this one was completely different. This wasn’t a simple break; it was a complex injury that led to nerve damage, which forced me to relearn how to walk and regain my balance. It was an extremely difficult and frustrating time for me. My identity shifted from an active person to someone who was defined by a long road to recovery. Lost was the person I once had been and my long road to recovery became my identity. Physical therapy, the support of family and friends, a positive outlook, and a lot of patience were key! When my longtime friend, Lisa Pederson, asked me to join her for “Get Fit with a Friend” at The Warehouse in February 2024, I was initially hesitant. I wasn’t sure how my foot would respond, but I also knew I couldn’t let my injury define me anymore. Signing up for classes at The Warehouse was exactly what I needed to move forward.
2. What has your experience been like since being part of The Warehouse? What have you learned? What has helped you grow or evolve? |
---|
The Warehouse has given me back a part of myself that has been missing for quite some time. I’ve not only rediscovered my love for working out, but I’ve also pushed myself beyond the typical strength training I used to do. The class format was one I hadn’t followed in years, so it was an adjustment for me. I quickly learned it was exactly what I needed. The classes challenged me and were different every time. Surprisingly, my foot usually feels it’s best when it is moving. Although parts of it are discolored and swelling extends into my calf, my mind now has a different relationship with the lingering effects of the injury. The Warehouse community has supported, encouraged, and empowered me to show up for myself, no matter where my body is in the moment.
3. What has changed for you (attitude, energy, habits, priorities, race times, blood work, confidence, etc.)?
I ‘ve regained my strength and confidence, thanks to The Warehouse! After a few months, I noticed a huge improvement in my balance and flexibility. It’s a flashback for me whenever we do the same balance movements or stretches that were part of my physical therapy. The difference is, now I can actually balance on one foot and grab my foot to do a quad stretch, which shows me how far I’ve come.
Being active again has made a huge difference in my life. I recently had a minor injury that sidelined me for a few months, and I know my work at The Warehouse allowed me to recover more quickly. The instructors consistently remind us to listen to our bodies and modify our workouts as needed, and I have learned the importance of that. I have also changed my workout style and now appreciate a variety of classes. My stamina and energy have improved, too. This summer, our family had a very active vacation, with lots of hiking at various intensity levels, and I know my time at The Warehouse prepared me for it.
4. What is your favorite Warehouse workout song?
I love so many genres of music and the 80s will always take me back in time. But really anything that has a good beat that motivates me to move and push myself is perfect for a workout.
5. Anything else you would like to share about your Experience at The Warehouse?
Years ago, my favorite workout class would have been anything with weights. Since joining The Warehouse, I’ve learned to love a variety of workouts that challenge me to improve my strength, cardio, and flexibility.
6. What is your favorite quote?
The quote, “All things are difficult before they become easy,” by Saadi Shirazi reminds me to always have patience and preserve.
